WITHDRAWAL FROM COURSES OR SCHOOL Students who wish to withdraw from courses must do so with the assistance of a counsellor and parents will be informed if the student is 16 or under. When withdrawing from school students must report to the office to complete the appropriate withdrawal forms. All school-owned books and supplies must be returned to classroom teachers. |

LIBRARY, INFORMATION & TECHNOLOGY SERVICES Gordon Bell has a large and well stocked library of books, magazines, videos and other materials accessible through the automated catalogue (ATHENA). Students can use the facility during the lunch hour, before classes in the morning, at times assigned by subject teachers, and in study periods. The teacher-librarian and subject teachers provide reading, guidance and instruction in the use of print, audio-visual and computer resources to support school programs, assignments, individual interests, hobbies and leisure reading. The library has a mini-lab of computers where students can access electronic encyclopedias and other information sources on CD Students in Grades 7-9 require a pass to be in the library during regular class slots. Grades 10-12 are required to carry their timetables with them. |

MIDDLE YEARS PLACEMENT Student Achievement Criteria: The following guidelines will be used when determining placement for students in MIDDLE YEARS at the end of each school year. PROMOTION: A student achieves 50% or more in three of the four core subjects. PLACEMENT: A student achieves 50% or more in two of the four core subjects. CONTINUE: A student was unable to achieve 50% in three of the four core subjects. A student who does not meet the criteria may be placed due to special or extenuating circumstances with approval from administration. CORE SUBJECTS: English Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science. |
CHILD DEVELOPMENT LAB
The purpose of the Child Development Lab is to allow students who are parents to attend school full time while school personnel and students care for their children. Students/Parents must be full time students, and may not leave the school while their child is in the program. They must take part in regular academic work, child care responsibilities and parenting courses. This includes a compulsory Family Studies/Nutrition program. They are required to spend lunch hours in the lab with their children. It is advisable to apply early for this program as spots for the children are limited.
TEXTBOOKS
All textbooks are provided by the school. As the cost of these books is very high, students are held accountable for their treatment and return. Students who damage books or lose them are expected to pay the cost of replacement. Books are to be returned at the end of each semester. It is expected that students will account for all school-owned materials prior to receiving school standing for the term.

SMOKING The Winnipeg School Division has a policy that prohibits smoking on all school property within The Winnipeg School Division. The policy applies to all staff as well as students. Students caught smoking on the school property will be suspended and sent home. |

ELECTRONIC DEVICES The Winnipeg School Division forbids the use of all electronic devices such as cell phones, MP3 players and I-Pods by all staff and students in classrooms and hallways. Laser pens are also forbidden. These devices will be confiscated and returned to the parents. |
COUNSELLING SERVICES
Students who wish to obtain information relating to careers, post-secondary information, subject choices or who may need to discuss individual personal problems may make an appointment to see one of our four counsellors.
As well as dealing with the above issues, the Counselling Department also has organized programs in Peer Support, Peer Tutoring and in Conflict Resolution. In these programs students are trained to assist other students to deal with and resolve the problematic situations that they face.
New students are encouraged to become part of this support group if they have an interest in this area.
CHILD GUIDANCE CLINIC
Staff and students at Gordon Bell are supported by the services of a C.G.C. unit. This service provides the school with expert support in Psychology, Psychiatry, Social Work, Speech and Hearing, and
The involvement of these specialists takes place only with the full consent and knowledge of the Parent/Guardian of the students.
STUDENT COUNCIL
Our very active Student Council is made up of elected and non-elected members from all grades. It plans many activities such as Remembrance Day, Halloween, Winter Holiday, Human Rights, Valentine’s Day and many other events. Pep rallies, dances and gym riots are also highlights organized by council. Members make many important decisions about school activities.

VISITORS For the safety of everyone in or around school we observe a strict policy of having all visitors report to the school office prior to transacting business in the school. Students are not to encourage friends who do not attend our school to visit them in school. This is to be viewed as a place of business. This policy is particularly important because of the central location of the school on a major street in the city. Any visitors who cause problems in the school or on school property will be charged with trespassing. |
DRESS CODE
The Dress Code is as follows: Students are expected to dress in a manner acceptable to schools and the workplace. This includes: 1. No headgear allowed in class. 2. Offensive symbols, slogans and any identification related to “gangs” cannot be displayed on clothing. 3. Some sort of footwear must be worn at all times, both inside the school and on the school grounds. 4. All clothing must be worn in an appropriate manner. Since this list of items is not all conclusive, the administration will make the final determination on appropriate clothing worn during school hours. |

TO ALL STUDENTS/PARENTS/GUARDIANS SUSPENSION/EXPLUSION OF STUDENTS Depending on the severity of the offense, the following will result in a suspension ranging from one day to permanent expulsion: 1. Verbal intimidation or threats toward another person in the school or on school property. 2. Physical assault on another person in the school or on school property. 3. Possession or use of weapons in school buildings or on school property. 4. Possession or use of drugs/alcohol in school buildings or on school property. A pay telephone is located near the general office for student use. Only in special
circumstances may student calls be placed through the office telephone.

All Gordon Bell students are eligible to come to the cafeteria for a cold breakfast between
CAFETERIA
Cafeteria service is provided by the school. Every attempt is made to provide nutritious, reasonably-priced food for those students who wish to purchase their lunch. Students who bring their lunch from home are expected to eat in the cafeteria. All students are expected to clean their tables after completing their lunch. All food is to be consumed in the cafeteria and not in the hallways. The cafeteria is supervised and open during the day for grade
10 - 12 students to study or meet quietly when they have a spare.
LOST AND FOUND
A special area for lost and found items is located in the main office. These items can be claimed before and after school, or during the lunch hour. Do not bring expensive items to school. The school will not be responsible for lost or stolen items.
The school assumes no responsibility for the security of bicycles at school. Bikes should be chained and locked.
STAFF MEETINGS
In a school the size of Gordon Bell, it is important for the staff to meet and communicate. Regular monthly meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month at 2:40 p.m. Students will be dismissed at this time.
