Student E-mail Use Policies

WSD1 e-mail accounts are provided to Gordon Bell students at no charge.  These accounts can be used on any computer which has Internet access, at home or at school at URL http://mail.wsd1.org:8383/

The intent of the e-mail account is to better allow students to research and communicate about topics of educational interest, whether that be by exchanging information with experts in a particular field, with other students at Gordon Bell, or with other people anywhere in the world.

While the use of e-mail has many educational advantages, problems can arise.  It is possible that students may communicate about topics which you might find objectionable.  Although we encourage students to communicate in appropriate ways, it is not possible for us to observe every communication which is made.  E-mail is not monitored at the division level although a tracing procedure is in place if problems occur.  It is expected that students will comply with the policies outlined below:

E-mail policies

·         Only WSD1 accounts are to be used at school.  No hotmail, other e-mail accounts, chat rooms, MSN or other messaging is permitted.

·         Students should be aware of the dangers involved in providing phone numbers, addresses or other personal information while communicating on e-mail.  Such information should not be communicated.

·         E-mail is to be used to develop literacy and information skills, research topics of educational interest or communicate with others on appropriate topics of interest.  Inappropriate communication is unacceptable.

The e-mail accounts will be assigned by teachers as designated below:

Grades 7 - 9: Homeroom teachers

Grade 10: Slot B Teachers

Grade 12: English teachers

Off Campus Programs: Homeroom teachers

Students not complying with the above guidelines will lose their e-mail account.  Please review this information with your child.  If you have any questions or comments about e-mail accounts at Gordon Bell, please contact us at 774-5401.

Computer and Internet Use

Students attending Gordon Bell Secondary School have the opportunity to use computers and access the Internet as well as other on-line services.  Computer use will be offered to all students who comply with acceptable computer use guidelines.

One of the computer services offered in the school is the Internet.  This is an association of diverse communication and information networks.  It is possible that your student may run across areas of adult content and some material which you might find objectionable.  Although we discourage students from accessing such material, it may not be possible for us to completely limit that access.  Students are to comply with the guidelines listed below:

Acceptable computer use guidelines are as follows:

1)           Food, drinks, non-Gordon Bell disks or CDs are not allowed into the computer areas.

2)           Machine setups including screen savers, backgrounds, cursor styles, etc. are not to be changed.

3)           Computers are to be left logged off, clean and tidy after use.

4)           Permission from the lab supervising teacher and classroom teacher is needed if students wish to use a computer when another class is in the lab.  Senior students on spares require only the permission of the supervising teacher.

5)           Students are not to download without teacher permission.  Programs are not to be installed without approval of the Technology Department.

6)           Inappropriate sites on the Internet are not to be accessed.

7)           Files should be saved on drives as directed by the teacher.

8)           Chat rooms, hotmail, MSN, and email (other than WSD1) are not to be accessed.

9)           Sites which require registration with passwords, names or other personal information are not to be accessed except under the direction of a teacher.

10)       Material should be saved on network drives.

Students not complying with guidelines will lose the right to use computers in the school for a period of time.  Please review the above information with your child.  If you have any questions about the computer use at Gordon Bell, please contact us at 774-5401.

Guidelines for Computer Safety….

  • Talk to your children about their use of computers and discuss the dangers.

  • Ask your children to teach you how to operate a computer.

  • Take a computer course yourself.

  • Know the capabilities of your computer.  A modem can connect your children to any kind of information and all types of people.

  • Internet service providers can provide a filtered or unfiltered feed.  This filtered feed will not allow access to the majority of sex-related newsgroups.  It is not foolproof.

  • Learn how to access the I.S.P. home page to determine the number of computer hours used per month.  Accounts can be set up so each individual has their own access codes and separate records.

  • There are software packages available at computer software stores that can block access to sites.  (see software solutions)

  • Computers can be addicting.  Limit time allotted on a computer.  Watch to see if a child is withdrawing from friends and family.

  • Keep computers in areas where their use can be monitored.  Do not install a computer in a child’s bedroom or other isolated areas.

  • Advise your children never to give out their full names, address, age, phone number, school name, financial information, or any other personal information.

  • Advise your children never to meet with persons they meet through the Internet.

  • Watch for the computer files ending with letters GIF, JPG, MPG, AVI, MOV, BMP, TIF, PCX, DL, and GL, as these contain photographic or movie images which could contain pornography.
